1099-NEC vs 1099-MISC vs 1099-K: Which Forms Owe Self-Employment Tax (2026)

โœ๏ธ Rahul B.๐Ÿ“… Updated September 14, 2026โฑ 9 min read

"1099" is not one form โ€” it's a family of about twenty, and they are taxed in completely different ways. People search for a "1099 tax calculator" holding a 1099-R from a pension, a 1099-K from selling a couch on Marketplace, a 1099-C from a settled credit card, and a 1099-NEC from a client. Only one of those owes the 15.3% self-employment tax. This guide sorts every common 1099 by how it's actually taxed, and lists the 2026 thresholds that changed under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

The one-line answer: Self-employment tax applies to income from a trade or business you run โ€” which in practice means the 1099-NEC and business-related 1099-K payments (and 1099-MISC amounts that are really business income). Every other 1099 โ€” R, C, B, G, INT, DIV, S โ€” is ordinary income or capital gain taxed without self-employment tax, and doesn't belong in a self-employment tax calculator.

Thresholds are the payer's obligation to send a form. Every dollar is taxable whether or not a form arrives.

1099-NEC: the one that always owes self-employment tax

The NEC ("non-employee compensation") is the form a business sends when it pays an individual for services and doesn't withhold tax. It replaced box 7 of the old 1099-MISC in 2020, and if you freelance, consult, drive for a delivery app, or contract for anyone, this is the form you'll get. The amount in box 1 is gross โ€” nothing has been taken out โ€” and it flows to Schedule C, where you subtract expenses. The profit is then hit by both taxes:

The combined effective rate for a single filer runs from 14% at $10,000 of profit to 31% at $300,000 โ€” the full table is in our 1099 tax rate guide, and the calculator handles any income and state.

๐Ÿ’ก The 2026 threshold change

Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a payer only has to issue a 1099-NEC once they've paid you $2,000 or more in the year, up from $600, indexed for inflation from 2027. Clients who paid you $1,200 will send nothing. You still report and pay tax on the $1,200; the $400 self-employment filing threshold is unchanged.

1099-MISC: mostly not self-employment income any more

Since the NEC took over service payments, the MISC has become a catch-all for things that are usually not subject to SE tax:

1099-MISC boxTypical sourceTax treatment
Box 1 โ€” RentsTenant or property manager paying you rentSchedule E, ordinary income, no SE tax (unless you're a real-estate dealer or provide hotel-like services)
Box 2 โ€” RoyaltiesBook, music, mineral, licensing royaltiesSchedule E, no SE tax โ€” unless you created the work as your business (an author's royalties on their own books are Schedule C and do owe SE tax)
Box 3 โ€” Other incomePrizes, awards, contest winnings, research-study payments, some legal settlements, incentive paymentsSchedule 1 line 8, ordinary income, no SE tax
Box 6 โ€” Medical paymentsInsurers paying a providerBusiness income for the provider, Schedule C, SE tax
Box 10 โ€” Attorney proceedsSettlement funds paid to a lawyerDepends on the underlying claim

The frequent mistake runs the other way: a client who should have sent a 1099-NEC sends a 1099-MISC with the amount in box 3. The form's label doesn't change the law. If the money was payment for your services, it is self-employment income and goes on Schedule C regardless of which form or box it landed in.

1099-K: it depends entirely on what the money was

A 1099-K comes from a payment processor or platform โ€” Stripe, Square, PayPal, Venmo (business profile), Etsy, eBay, Uber, Lyft, Airbnb โ€” and reports the gross amount that flowed through them to you. It says nothing about why. The tax treatment follows the reason:

โœ… 2026 threshold: back to $20,000 and 200 transactions

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act permanently repealed the $600 1099-K rule that was scheduled to phase in, restoring the original threshold of more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. Most casual sellers and part-time gig workers will receive no 1099-K at all for 2026. Business income is still taxable; the form is just paperwork.

Double-reporting: 1099-K plus 1099-NEC for the same money

If a client pays you $30,000 through a platform that issues 1099-Ks, and the client also issues you a 1099-NEC for the same $30,000, the IRS's computers now see $60,000 of forms. Report the income once, at the true gross figure on Schedule C. Keep the invoices and platform statements showing the overlap; if a matching notice arrives, the records resolve it.

The forms that never owe self-employment tax

1099-R: retirement distributions

Money coming out of a 401(k), IRA, pension or annuity. It's ordinary income (except the portion that was already taxed, such as Roth or after-tax contributions), and before age 59ยฝ a 10% early-distribution penalty usually applies on top. No self-employment tax, ever โ€” a self-employment calculator will overstate the tax on a 1099-R by 14%. Use a plain income tax calculator or the IRS withholding estimator instead.

1099-C: cancelled debt

When a lender writes off $600 or more, the forgiven amount is taxable income โ€” unless an exclusion applies. The big ones: you were insolvent (debts exceeded assets) immediately before the cancellation, the debt was discharged in bankruptcy, it was qualified principal residence debt, or it was a student loan discharged under the rules that run through 2025 (federal student loan forgiveness is excluded through the end of 2025; check the current rule for later years). File Form 982 to claim an exclusion. No SE tax.

1099-B: broker sales

Stock, ETF, and broker-held crypto sales. Gains are capital gains (0/15/20% long-term rates if held over a year, ordinary rates if not); losses offset gains and up to $3,000 of ordinary income. No SE tax, unless you qualify as a securities trader with trader tax status, which is rare.

1099-G: unemployment and state refunds

Unemployment compensation is fully taxable federal income (some states exempt it). A state tax refund is only taxable if you itemised and deducted state taxes the prior year. No SE tax.

1099-INT and 1099-DIV

Interest is ordinary income. Qualified dividends get the lower capital-gains rates. Neither owes SE tax, and neither counts toward the $400 self-employment threshold.

Which 1099s belong in a 1099 tax calculator?

Our 1099 tax calculator โ€” and every "1099 tax calculator" you'll find โ€” is a self-employment calculator. Enter:

Do not enter 1099-R, 1099-C, 1099-B, 1099-G, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV or SSA-1099 income as self-employment income โ€” it will add a 14.1% tax that doesn't exist. Those amounts affect your bracket, so if they're large, the closest approximation is to enter them as "other income" where the calculator allows it, or run the full return in tax software.

What to do if a 1099 is wrong or missing

Payers must furnish 1099-NEC forms to you by January 31, 2027 for 2026 income; most other 1099s by January 31 or February 15. If you paid a contractor $2,000 or more yourself in 2026, you have the same January 31 obligation to issue them a 1099-NEC.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay self-employment tax on a 1099-MISC?

Usually not. Since 2020 pay for services goes on the 1099-NEC, which does carry self-employment tax. The 1099-MISC now mostly reports rent (Schedule E), royalties, prizes and other income (Schedule 1, line 8), none of which are subject to SE tax unless they come from a business you actively run.

Is 1099-K income taxed as self-employment income?

It depends on what the payments were for. Card and app payments for goods or services you sell as a business go on Schedule C and are subject to SE tax. Personal items sold at a loss, reimbursements from friends and gifts are not income at all and should be backed out on Schedule 1. For 2026 a 1099-K is only issued above $20,000 and 200 transactions.

Does a 1099-R count as 1099 income for self-employment tax?

No. A 1099-R reports pension, annuity, 401(k) and IRA distributions. They are taxed as ordinary income, may carry a 10% early-withdrawal penalty before age 59ยฝ, and never owe self-employment tax. A self-employment tax calculator will overstate the tax on a 1099-R.

What is the 1099-NEC threshold for 2026?

$2,000 per payer, up from $600, for payments made in 2026 onward, indexed for inflation from 2027. The threshold only governs whether a form is issued; all income is taxable regardless.

What if I got a 1099-K and a 1099-NEC for the same money?

Report the income once. This happens when a client pays through a third-party platform that files a 1099-K while the client also files a 1099-NEC. Enter your actual gross receipts on Schedule C and keep records showing the overlap in case the IRS matches the forms and asks.
