Proc. 2025-32 brackets, $16,100/$32,200 standard deduction, 15.3% SE tax on 92.35% of net profit, $184,500 Social Security wage base, and full progressive state brackets for all 41 taxing states + DC.
What $1,000 of write-offs saves, 2026
Tax saved by one more $1,000 of business expenses, for a single filer taking the standard deduction.
| Net profit | No state income tax | California | New York |
|---|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $234 | $253 | $284 |
| $50,000 | $253 | $290 | $303 |
| $75,000 | $346 | $420 | $396 |
| $100,000 | $346 | $432 | $401 |
| $150,000 | $364 | $451 | $419 |
| $200,000 | $343 | $430 | $398 |
The saving has three parts. Self-employment tax falls by $141, because it is charged at 14.13% of profit. Federal income tax falls by your bracket rate, applied to the $1,000 less the half of that self-employment tax you can no longer deduct. State income tax falls by the state's rate. At $75,000 with no state tax that is $141 plus 22% of $929, or $346.
Why a deduction is worth more to a freelancer than to an employee
A business expense reduces net profit, and net profit is the base for both self-employment tax and income tax. An employee's deduction, where one is allowed at all, reduces income tax only. That extra 14.13% is why the same $1,000 expense saves a freelancer in the 22% bracket about a third of its cost and an employee in the same bracket $220.
Limits that apply by category
The test for any business expense is that it is ordinary and necessary for your work (IRC §162). Several categories have their own rules.
- Home office. The space has to be used regularly and only for work. The simplified method allows $5 a square foot up to 300 square feet, so $1,500 at most. The regular method on Form 8829 deducts the actual share of rent, utilities and insurance.
- Vehicle. Either the standard mileage rate, which is 72.5 cents a mile through June 30, 2026 and 76 cents from July 1, or actual costs multiplied by the business-use share. Driving from home to a regular place of work is commuting and does not count. Keep a log with the date, miles and purpose of each trip.
- Meals. Half the cost of a business meal with a client or while travelling for work.
- Equipment. Items costing $2,500 or less can be deducted in full in the year of purchase under the de minimis safe harbor election. Larger purchases go through Section 179 or depreciation.
- Phone and internet. The business-use share only.
Deductions this tool does not model
Three large deductions sit outside Schedule C. They lower income tax but not self-employment tax, and the calculator leaves them out, so your bill may be lower than shown.
- Self-employed health insurance. Premiums for yourself and your family, deducted on Schedule 1.
- Retirement contributions. A Solo 401(k) can shelter up to $72,000 in 2026, or $80,000 from age 50. The Solo 401(k) vs SEP-IRA comparison has the numbers.
- The QBI deduction. Up to 20% of qualified business income, taken from federal taxable income.
What is not deductible
- Commuting between home and a regular workplace.
- Clothing you could wear outside work.
- The personal share of a phone, car or home.
- Fines and penalties paid to a government.
- Entertainment such as tickets and events, which stopped being deductible in 2018.
Records the IRS expects
Keep a receipt or bank record for each expense. For vehicle use keep a mileage log written at the time, not rebuilt later. For meals and travel, note who you met and why. Digital copies are fine.
Hold everything for at least three years after you file. The IRS can go back six years if income was understated by more than 25%.
FAQ
How much does a $1,000 deduction save?
For a single filer in a state with no income tax in 2026, $234 at $30,000 of net profit, $253 at $50,000 and $346 at $100,000. State income tax adds to that: in California the figure at $100,000 is $432.
Is this a 1099 write-off calculator?
Yes. A write-off and a deduction are the same thing: a business expense subtracted from 1099 income before tax is charged. Enter expenses by category and the calculator shows the tax they remove.
Can I deduct expenses without receipts?
You have to be able to prove a deduction. Keep receipts, bank statements and a mileage log. Without records the IRS can disallow the expense in an audit.
Is the home office deduction an audit risk?
Not when the space qualifies. The simplified method, $5 a square foot up to 300 square feet, is easy to support if the area is used regularly and only for business.
Do deductions lower my quarterly estimated payments?
Yes. Deductions lower net profit, and quarterly payments are based on the tax on net profit. Run the quarterly tax calculator again once you have a figure for expenses.
