The State Rate Is Only Part of the Kentucky Bill
A flat 3.5% with a small deduction
The rate fell from 4% to 3.5% on January 1, 2026. The standard deduction is $3,360 and there is no personal exemption. On $75,000 of net profit the state tax is $2,322.
Many freelance services carry 6% sales tax
On January 1, 2023 Kentucky extended its sales tax to more than thirty categories of services. The list includes several that freelancers sell every day: website design, development and hosting, marketing services, and photography and photo finishing.
If you sell one of the listed services to Kentucky customers and those sales pass $6,000 in a year, you need a sales tax permit and must add 6% to your invoices. Writing and bookkeeping are not on the list. The Department of Revenue publishes the full list with definitions. It is worth reading, because the line between "marketing services" and general consulting is not always where you would guess.
City and county occupational taxes apply to your net profit
Most Kentucky cities and many counties levy an occupational license tax. Employees see it as a payroll deduction. Self-employed people owe it on net profit and have to file a separate return with the local tax office.
In Louisville Metro the rate is 2.2% for residents and 1.45% for non-residents who work there, filed on Form OL-3 with the Louisville Metro Revenue Commission. Lexington and most other cities have their own rates and forms. A Louisville resident with $75,000 of profit owes the city about $1,650 on top of the state's 3.5%, which brings the combined rate close to 5.7%.
The calculator shows state tax only. It flags that local tax exists but cannot know which city or county applies to you. Add your local rate to the figure before you set your quarterly amount aside.

📐 How these Kentucky numbers are produced
The calculator and every table on this page run the same engine: 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction, and self-employment tax at 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit. Kentucky's own 2026 brackets, deductions, exemptions and credits are applied on top, as shown step by step in the calculator. When a legislature changes a rate during the year, the engine is updated and the change is recorded on the methodology and changelog page.
