Montana in 2026: A Lower Top Rate and a Wider First Bracket
What changed this year
House Bill 337 rewrote the brackets. In 2025 the 4.7% rate ended at about $21,100 of taxable income, and everything above was taxed at 5.9%. For 2026 the 4.7% rate runs to $47,500 for a single filer and $95,000 for a joint return, and the top rate drops to 5.65%. A further cut to 5.4% is scheduled for 2027.
On $75,000 of net profit the Montana bill is now $2,577. On the same taxable income the 2025 schedule would have charged about $330 more.
Montana starts from federal taxable income
Since 2024 the Montana return has begun with federal taxable income, not adjusted gross income. The practical effect is that your federal standard deduction of $16,100, or $32,200 for a couple, is already built in. There is no separate Montana standard deduction or personal exemption to work out, and most of the adjustments you make on the federal return carry straight through.
No sales tax to collect
Montana has no general sales tax at the state or local level. A freelancer selling services, templates, prints or physical products to Montana customers has nothing to register for and nothing to collect. A handful of resort communities such as Whitefish and Big Sky charge a local resort tax, but it applies to lodging, restaurant meals and luxury goods sold in those towns and not to professional services.
Quarterly payments
The Department of Revenue expects estimated payments when you will owe $500 or more for the year. The dates match the federal ones. There is no city or county income tax anywhere in Montana.

📐 How these Montana numbers are produced
The calculator and every table on this page run the same engine: 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction, and self-employment tax at 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit. Montana's own 2026 brackets, deductions, exemptions and credits are applied on top, as shown step by step in the calculator. When a legislature changes a rate during the year, the engine is updated and the change is recorded on the methodology and changelog page.
